Establishment
of the SAAF Air Power Development Centre
As
part of the SAAF Strategy promulgated in 2001, Director Education Training
and Development was tasked to implement the plan to
ensure that Air Force members are knowledgeable in terms of air power. This led to the establishment of the Air Power
Wing (APW) at the SA Air Force College, in January 2002.
In essence, this step is an attempt to be more pro-active in terms of air power, in
order to facilitate a revolutionary thinking approach in terms of matters related to air
power. Each and every SAAF person must
understand and appreciate air power.
In November
2002 the APWs name changed to the Air Power Development Centre (APDC), because of
the fact that the scope of work have increased to address a much wider spectrum of Air
Power than originally intended.
The APDC
vision is: Dynamism
in Air Power Thinking
The mission of
the APDC is to establish a Centre of Excellence for Air Power Developmental
Training by means of promulgated air power courses at various levels in the
SAAF. The initial focus is to establish a
high level of air power knowledge within the Air Force and gradually expand this focus to
also include the rest of the SANDF/DOD and even other organisations external to the DOD.
To adequately meet the future requirements of the SANDF and
specifically the SAAF, it is imperative that the end product is designed on sound
educational technology principles and that it eventually meets international standards, as
well as covers all applicable fields of study. The
APW has the responsibility to teach future commanders and all support personnel in the
SAAF, the essence of air power and its application, as dictated by the (Southern) African
scenario.
Since January 2003 the APDC commenced with the presentation of Air
Power programs at all the developmental courses at the SA Air Force College. The APDC also presents or will be presenting Air
Power programs at the Air Force Gymnasium, Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligence Centre
(JARIC), National War College, Defence Intelligence College, Army College, Maritime
Warfare Centre in Cape Town, SA Medical Health Academy and the Army Gymnasium in
Heidelberg. Some sixty (60) Air Power
programs will be presented throughout the DOD, per annum.
