Behind the scenes at AFB WKLF Movement Control

The loadmasters at AFB Waterkloof Movement Control are a group of men with an immense workload. For example 10 043 departing passengers and 322 252 601.03 kg of freight were handled in 2004. These members are subjected to variations like handling foreign visiting dignitaries, our Parliamentary members, foreign and local military personnel and operational flights. A typical day for a loadmaster would be marshalling, loading and offloading of aircraft, palletizing or even preparing the red carpet for a visiting dignitary.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development was a highlight in their careers worth mentioning. Twenty-four hour duties were performed and different types of aircraft from all over the world were received and handled. The members were unanimous that working with nationalities never before having breached our shores was indeed both interesting and exciting.

Another event worth mentioning was the inauguration event of President Mbeki in 2004. Twenty-five different countries were received and handled. The World Summit on Sustainable Development enabled the staff to hone their skills thus ensuring the success of handling aircraft for the inauguration event.

They are truly a unique and hard working group of individuals who make AFB Waterkloof proud.
