“If you are the majority
should you not accept that it is your Air Force and start
acting as if you own this Air Force?” - Lt Gen Carlo
Gagiano, CAF
The
airman/NCO group of the SAAF makes out an indispensable part
of the organisation. The first ever award ceremony to
recognise the NCO/Airman Achiever of the Year was presided
by the new CAF, Lt Gen Carlo Gagiano.
CAF expressed a special word of appreciation to the Sergeant
Major of the Air Force, WO1 S.J. Du Preez, for his role in
the implementation of the NCO Achiever Evaluation Process.
Lt Gen Gagiano has a keen understanding of the composition
of the SAAF and notes: “… today, we will find that the
majority of the SAAF’s members are NCOs. ” We will also
notice that they prepare the meals in the messes, refuel the
aircraft, issue commodities from stores, fix the snags on
the aircraft, drill the new recruits during basic training,
manage our leave credits, man the fire trucks, pack the
parachutes, serve meals on the President’s aircraft, task
the aircraft in the ops rooms, guard our valuable assets,
hang the bombs on the fighters and many more."
What does Lt Gen Gagiano expect of the airmen/NCOs of the
SAAF?
-
I expect
of you to do your job with absolute integrity.
-
I expect
of you to always stick to your route when driving a
military vehicle.
-
You are
leaders in your own right who are deserving of the
respect and confidence of both your seniors and your
subordinates.
-
Excellence is the focus. Competence is the watchword.
-
New ideas
must be your focus, if you are the majority, surely we
should expect of you to produce the majority of
innovative ideas.
-
Have
respect for one another. Treat you fellow Air Force
members with the dignity they deserve.
-
Do not
forget that we are in service of our country and its
people.
Lt Gen
Gagiano says: “All of us must go forth and spread the word,
‘OK’ is not good enough and a phrase not to be found in the
SAAF’s dictionary. Excellence, passion, commitment,
patriotism, discipline and optimism; these are my kind of
words.”
Congratulations go to all those achievers who received
certificates. They are:
