Historical Air Show at AFS Port
Elizabeth
A
historical occasion took place on 29 October 2005, when the
first air show in a decade was held at AFS Port Elizabeth.
An air show of this magnitude is seldom seen in the city, as
the Air Force Station and the civilian airport share a
runway.
The show commenced at 10:00 and was opened by the Officer
Commanding of AFS Port Elizabeth, Lt Col Lennox Mzongwana.
Several aircraft including DC9, BK 117 and Oryx helicopters,
Dakotas and Cheetah aircraft participated in the show.
Spectators were treated to skydiving and a demonstration by
the Fire Section.
AFS PE is regarded as the second oldest Air Force Base in
South Africa and has a rich history, and notwithstanding bad
weather conditions hundreds of spectators made their way to
the event. Amongst the spectators were visitors from Kenya
who were highly impressed with the event and said that they
will still talk about the show long after it has passed and
they have returned to their home country.
Ever-present were the SAAF Museum crew who also did their
part in the show who marketed a book compiled by Frans Dely.
The book proved to be a winner and it was concluded that the
public is still interested in the aviation industry.
This being said, it is enough to say that the show was an
enormous success and was enjoyed by all.
