Major General Wiseman Simo Mbambo

Major General Wiseman Simo Mbambo was born in Durban on 15 March 1966. He grew up in Northern KwaZulu Natal village called Ngoje. He matriculated from Springs Promat College. He joined the ANC’s military wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe, in 1984 and specialised in Military Engineering. During 1985 he went to Yugoslavia for a military intelligence and diversionary course and was later appointed as a staff Commander at Vienna transit camp in Luanda. He was later transferred to Kibaxe Training Centre (Northern Angola) as military engineering instructor for new recruits.

From 1987 to 1991 he was sent to Russia for aviation training, specialising in Combat Aviation Control (Mission Control). During 1991 – 1992 he became the co-ordinator for overseas military training in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. In 1994 he was appointed co-chairperson Air Force Workgroup for integration matters and served on various committees and boards representing former MK members on integration issues.

Major General Mbambo completed a BA in Military Science (Frunze Military College – 1991), Defence Management Studies at Wits Business School in 1994, Masters Degree in Strategic Studies at the Air University in the USA in 2004, Diploma in Ministry Studies at Faith International Bible College in 2008 and Diploma in Aviation Safety and Security from the University of Southern California in 2012. Since integrating into the South African Air Force, he has been appointed in various posts: Operations Planning Officer at Bushveld Airspace Control Sector; Force Utilisation Executive Officer at Bushveld Airspace Control Sector; Officer Commanding 140 Squadron, Air Force Mobile Deployment Wing; Staff Officer Airspace Control Operations Support, Directorate Air Capability Plan, Officer Commanding Bushveld Airspace Control Sector. In 2004 he was appointed General Officer Commanding Air Force Base Waterkloof and promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. In August 2009 he was appointed Director Air Capability Plans responsible for Air Force Strategy and Plans. On 1 January 2013 he was appointed General Officer Commanding of the Air Command with promotion to the rank of Major General.

Major General Mbambo successfully completed his Junior Command and Staff Course in 1997, the Senior Command and Staff Course in 2001 and National Security Programme in the USA from June 2003 – June 2004. He was awarded, amongst others, the Unitas medal, MK Service Medal (Bronze), Non Statutory Forces Operations Medal, 20 Years Good Service Medal and the best overall progress award for a student on the Senior Command and Staff Course 1/2001.

Major General Mbambo’s life motto is: “With God Nothing is Impossible”.

He is married to Thokozani, and the couple is blessed with four sons, namely Pontsho, Sibusiso, Musawenkosi and Manqoba.
