New developments at
the South African Air Force Museum
By Lt Zola Nombida SAAF
Museum Corporate Communication Officer
First and foremost, the
standard of the displays has undoubtedly improved. For
example, the display that depicts the integration of
statutory and non statutory forces has got new painting of
the national flag which shows unity. Even though the display
team is still working on APLA and MK displays, the work that
has been done is commendable. In order for the display team
to finish its work, soldiers from former APLA and MK are
urged to donate their artifacts to the Museum.
There is a simulator of the
liberator as well as aircraft that were used during the
Second World War. In the hangars there is a lot of fighter
aircraft such as Mirage 111 FAZ, Mirage 111 BZ and Cheetah
with its simulator just to mention a few.
There is also a tuck shop
that offers the best service to our tourists. It opens from
10h00 to 14h00 from Tuesday to Saturday. It also works as a
restaurant therefore, the tourists can either book full
lunch or finger lunch while school kids can buy sweets,
chips, and soft drinks and so on.
Even though there is still a
need for additional members, the new members that have just
joined the Museum have indeed boosted the marketing drive at
the SAAF Museum. And of paramount importance, the new
Officer in Charge of the SAAF Museum, Col Spolander has
introduced new management system. This system is making it
easy for the management team and the Museum personnel to
find a sense of belonging to the Museum.
There is also a Camp
Commandant who is working hand in hand with the Officer in
Charge in terms of improving Museum facilities. The standard
of signage has also improved for example, there are
marketing boards outside and inside the unit even though the
standard is still not yet the desired one. All these
developments are aimed at maintaining the public military
aviation interest
