AFB Overberg celebrates Casual/
Arbour day
Air
Force Base Overberg celebrated arbour day on 02 September
2005. It was decided to combine the planting of trees with
Casual day. All the members of the base gathered at the
Sickbay, where after they went for a walk in the veld led by
Lt R. van Wyk, the Environmental Officer of the base. The
ladies were treated with a flower bouquet constructed from
Cape fynbos. A guest speaker from the Overberg Crane working
group, Ms Vicki Hudson gave an informal lecture to base
personnel on our national bird, the blue crane. The members
then had another walk to the sport complex, where the
Officer Commanding, Colonel T. Cross planted a tree on
behalf of the base personnel. Members then enjoyed coffee
and beverages where after the various sections had the
opportunity to plant a tree at their own sections. The tree
of the year, the false cabbage is a tree that demands a lot
of water and attention, and would not be ideal for the
environment at Air Force Base Overberg, therefore it was
decided to plant the coastal red-milkwood tree, as it is a
tree that is indigenous to the area.
