SAAFA Pretoria Branch Banquet
By CO Maryke Lynn
On 14 October 2005 the Pretoria Branch of the SAAF
Association held their diamond jubilee banquet at the AFB
Waterkloof officers mess. The evening started with a sherry
and sparkling orange cocktail in hand, while guests listened
to the soothing sounds of the SAAF band’s brass ensemble,
and the pipes and drums of the SAMHS in their traditional
Scottish outfits.
This very suitable opening was followed by a mouth watering
starter consisting of Impala Terrine with a red wine cream
and salad, as well as lemon-butter sauce alongside
butterfish. The main dish was also something off the top
shelf and left all with a feeling of contented satiety.
Everyone present proudly joined in the traditional toasts to
our country, South Africa, the South African Air Force and
the SAAF Association. After a deliriously delicious desert,
the master of ceremonies, Ken Smith, introduced the guest
speaker, Councillor Jan van Zyl, who made use of this
memorable opportunity to speak a few words regarding local
government and the election thereof.
As the core basis and reason behind it’s founding, the South
African Air Force Association’s mission was also once again
strongly stated:
“The South African Air Force Association will, through the
participation of its members -
- maintain and foster friendship and
camaraderie among all its members and persons eligible
for membership;
- provide support and general
well-being for aged members;
- perpetuate the memory of and
commemorate those who have given their lives in the
service of their country;
- promote the interests, image and
history of the South African Air Force Association, the
South African Air Force, and their members.
The function was ended on a festive note
as names were drawn out of a big top-hat and various prizes
were awarded to some lucky winners.
Without doubt, this evening’s 60th anniversary celebrations
will go down as a memorable occasion in the record books of
the SAAF Association.
