SAAF Fire Drill Competitions held at AFB Makhado

By Capt G.J.F. Erasmus

The Fire Drill competition proved to be an exciting event for 2008 with seven Air Force fire teams representing their various bases and units. The high angle rescue event commenced on 14 April 2008 and was completed on 15 April 2008. It was evident that all teams arrived well prepared since judges had difficulty to decide on the team for this event.

On Wednesday, 16 April, the competitors proceeded with the Fire Vehicle drills. The first vehicle drill to commence was the serpentine vehicle drill. This event required pure driving skills with the specialised fire vehicles. In the second event of the day, the drivers had to proceed from a docking position and strike a target with the use of the bumper monitor. The vehicle then had to return to the docking position and proceeded into an opposite direction to strike the last target with the main monitor. All the drills were measured in time and any irregular actions by participants were scrupulously observed and noted on the judges’ scoring sheets.

The team obstacle drill was an exciting and nail biting event where only three teams were nominated to proceed to the finals which were on Friday, 18 April 2008 to determine the final winner. The teams selected were AFB Makhado, AFB Waterkloof and AFB Ysterplaat.

On Thursday, 17 April 2008 the teams competed in events such as the toughest aviation fire fighter (members over 35), combined team hose drill, toughest platoon as well as the combined vehicle drill.

All teams competed in ten different events and AFB Makhado took the honours with a first place in the following disciplines:

  • Toughest Fire Fighter – Male over 35 years of age
