Zimbabwe Air Force team pay goodwill visit to SAAF

A six men entourage from Air Force Zimbabwe (AFZ) led by their Commander, Air Marshall P. Shiri, visited the South African Air Force Headquarters (SAAF HQ) in Tshwane on 8 October 2008.

Speaking to the Zimbabwean delegation, Lt Gen Carlo Gagiano, Chief of the South African Air Force (CAF), spoke about the mandate of the SAAF. He reiterated that it provided and managed the air defence of the Department of Defence (DoD).

Furthermore, he noted that, it ensured that they supported any department of state, for purposes of socio-economic mobilization, upholding of law and order in co-operation with the South African Police Services (SAPS), preservation of life, health, property and maintenance of essential services.

Additionally, the visit was designed to strengthen the relationship between the two countries. And, a discussion on how the two southern African nations can join in multinational deployments and exercises, connectivity, interoperability, flying and parachute training and air defence were held.

The visit was within the realm of the African Union (AU) principles of partnership for African development and security. The delegation afterwards visited AFB Bloemspruit, 44 Parachute Regiment and AFB Langebaanweg.
