Giving to the less fortunate, particularly to children,
seems to be the most natural thing for the 17 Squadron team.
The Squadron held an outreach programme on 14 May 2010 at
Swartkop Airfield, near Valhalla.
“17 Squadron invited 400 children from various orphanages,
schools, hospitals and abuse centres around the Tshwane area
for a fun-filled day”, said Lt Corne Botha.
Callinah Maphosa from the Kids Care and Support Orphans
Vulnerable Children (OVC) said that their main purpose was
to assist children with clothing, food and social grants.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Hotel Formula 1, Zarhar
Peera, who participated for the first time in the programme,
said that all they wanted was to have fun with the children.
They provided food, drinks and jumping castles.
The children were thrilled about the food, drinks and
sweets, but mostly about the opportunity to fly in SAAF
aircraft.
“I was touched by the reactions of the children when the
food parcels were dropped into the three different charity
organisations in Soshanguve, Bronkonspruit and Refilwe,
north of Cullinan,” said 2Lt Tlhalefo Moroole.
Young Tshepo Molefane (13), from Leamogetswe Safety Home in
Atteridgeville, said that he was very happy that he was
going to climb in a helicopter for the first time.
