It was with great excitement that the Air Force Office, Air
Command Unit and South African Air Force (SAAF) HQ Unit
personnel engaged in supporting the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

Col Ettiene de Bod shaking hands with Thomas Madigage after
delivering the short speech to SAAF members
On 27 May 2010 personnel attended the CAF Communication
Period in the Sir Pierre van Ryneveld hall. It was
exceptional; because almost everyone wore 2010 World Cup
related soccer wear – making the occasion, with decorations
and of course the sound of Vuvuzelas, a colourful one. SAAF
HQ Unit Officer Commanding (OC), Col Ettiene de Bod, opened
the forum. It is the culture of the SAAF to put on dress 2 -
“full blues” - every last Thursday of the month; this time
with a difference.

Diski dancers from SAAF HQ Unit
Chaplain Arrie Burt addressed the forum with a soccer
prayer. The chaplain emphasised the theme of victory in
every race when he read from the book of I Corinthians 9,
verses 24-27, and II Timothy 4, verses 6-8. The sermon
clearly pointed out that in running the race, our squad
would definitely win the race.
An amazing soccer diski dance group followed the prayer.
Their performance was excellent. One of South Africa’s
soccer legends and former Bafana Bafana player, Tomas
Madigage, honoured the audience with his presence. He
uttered words of wisdom that encouraged every one, thanking
the SAAF for the good work they are doing in supporting the
2010 Soccer World Cup. The SAAF in particular is the
backbone of a safer air space and air space control, for
safe arrivals in the country.
Although the celebration was of a short nature, it displayed
a professional approach from SAAF HQ Unit organisers. Indeed
we are one.
